Local SEO: how to show up on Google when people search for your service nearby

· 8 min read · LEXATEK

When someone searches for “dentist near me”, “auto repair in [their city]” or “accountant downtown”, Google first shows a map with three businesses and then the regular results. Showing up there can mean phone calls every day. That’s called local SEO, and it’s one of the most profitable investments for a business that serves a city or region.

How Google decides who to show

According to Google’s own help pages, local results depend mainly on three factors:

  • Relevance: how well your business matches what the person searched for.
  • Distance: how close you are to the searcher (or to the area they mentioned).
  • Prominence: how well known and trusted your business is: reviews, mentions on other sites and the quality of your website.

You can’t change distance; relevance and prominence, you can.

Step 1: your Google Business Profile

This is the listing that appears on the map (formerly Google My Business). It’s free and it’s the most important piece of local SEO.

  • Claim and verify it with a Google account owned by your business, not an employee’s personal one.
  • Choose the primary category carefully (as specific as possible) and add secondary categories if they apply.
  • Fill in everything: hours, phone, website, service area, description, services or products.
  • Upload real photos: storefront, interior, team, finished work. Refresh them from time to time.
  • Use posts for promotions, news or events.

Step 2: reviews, the factor you notice most

Reviews influence prominence and, above all, the customer’s decision. To get more and better ones:

  • Ask for them after finishing a job, with a direct link (by text message, WhatsApp or on your receipt).
  • Reply to all of them, good and bad, politely and without arguing.
  • Never buy reviews or offer discounts in exchange for ratings: it’s against Google’s policies and can cost you your listing.

Step 3: a website that backs up your listing

Your website is one of the signals Google uses to understand what you do and where. What helps most:

  • One page per service, each with its own title and description. A single “Services” page competes worse than “AC maintenance in [your city]”.
  • Mention the city and areas you serve, naturally.
  • Name, address and phone visible and exactly the same as on your listing.
  • Structured data (LocalBusiness schema) so Google reads your information without ambiguity.
  • Fast loading on phones: most local searches happen on a phone, often in a hurry.
  • A call or message button always within reach.

Consistent data everywhere. If your phone or address differs between your website, your listing, Facebook and directories, Google isn’t sure which one is right. Make sure they are identical everywhere.

Step 4: mentions on other sites

Other sites talking about you boost your prominence: reputable directories in your industry, chambers of commerce, suppliers, local media or events you take part in. Quality over quantity: ten relevant mentions are worth more than a hundred questionable directories.

Step 5: measure what matters

Local SEO is measured in customers, not “visits”:

  • Your Business Profile shows calls, direction requests and website clicks.
  • Google Search Console shows which searches you appear for and at what position.
  • Google Analytics 4 shows how many leads (messages, calls, forms) come from Google.

How long does it take?

It depends on your city, your industry and how strong the competition is. Completing your listing and fixing your data usually shows results first; reviews and website content build results over the medium term. Be wary of anyone who guarantees first place: nobody controls Google’s results.
